Salut les gars,
I beg your pardon writing you on English, but the thread is too much long to let me answer by a short reply (Audie à l'aide).
There are many infos wrong which can only give a mistaken result. I'll try to clearfy some points
a) For example the Italian Navy destoryers range from Italy did not go beyone Gavdos is. (South west of Crete). Any idea to sail with the French (withut any more no common code or training) to recover the Force X, as ther French had proposed, knowing well the Marine Nationale warships at Alexandria were empty of fuel and munitions was an absurde exercise (not too much different from the Vichy proposal to germany for an action in A.E.F. against the Degullist: if we had had the fuel, if we had had the troops, if we had had the weapons ect. A lip service: When the Germans asked for real action on July 1940 the Mareshal answer: the armistice and only the armistice,. was the only correct and reasonable one. Laval (take it easy, yes, the infamous Monsieur Laval, by far the best politicioan France could have during those sad days by his maybe cynical, but effective Jaques Bonhomme (or Achille Talon) 's common sense) when replied to Adm. Darlan just after Mers-el-Kèbir destoying by a sentence any eatfiring proposal for war against Britain said, correcty: " One single debacle is more than enough).
b) The British and French naval blockade since Sept 1939 until June 1940 induced too many Italains to consider war as the only option. After London issued the total bak of coal on 1 March 1940 Italy could confide only in her stockpiles. By 10 June 1940 there were only less than 30 days. It was the French defeat which allowed the Swiss to open their passes to the german coal and to help with their onw trains too as the Brenner and Tarviso passes could allow only a transit by 500.000 t monthly in front of 1.000.000 t to allow industries, cooking and gas light as usual (with no extra production as a war would have asked for). The Allies had done th esame trick on 1914-1915. the difference was that on 1940 no Miracle of the Marne materialized.
c) The Tripoli naval shelling was a dangerous exercise (minor damages by a mine exploding on HMS Valiant paravane and splinter damages on a Destroyer by the shopre batteries) for nothing. The firing au hazard at night beyond the known range of the gun emplacements did not get any real result (like the shelling the British did on Sept. 1940, in the same circumstances, of a pair of French Channel harbours by HMS Erebus), except for some ruins inthe sciarmutte (whores) quartier of the harbour. The battlecry of the 1° Articelere (Royal Horse - motorized of course - artillery) which had landed some hours before become: Fight against us , not against the bitches (See by Enrico Genovesi, Rommel e i bersaglieri, ed. Longanesi, 1972).
d) The 1BS of the mediterranean Fleet on JUly 1940 was formed by Warspite, Malaya, Royal Sovereign and Ramillies supported by the carrier Eagle facing Cesare and Cavour. It was later reinforced by the BBs Valiant, Barham and the carrier Illustrious giving back the Royal Sovereign. Such a force, not considering the Force H - Renown and Royla Sovereign with the carrier Ark Royal - was considered, anyway, too much weak even after the Taranto night when the Regia Marina could oppose notoriously only the BB Vittorio veneto, Cesare and Doria (actually only the first two were available as the third was still on trainign and was sent to the Ligurinan Sea, an other fact the RAF reccnnaissance was well aware). So which was the real fleet in being? Who was avoiding action after the Action off Calabria? The more I read on this forum and in the French magazines the more I believe a French translation of a pair of good books (one is availabe on the net
http://www.marina.difesa.it/editoria/ri ... /art04.asp) is necessary.
I could go on for many pages, but it would become an aencyclopedia.
Salut mes amis
