However, the nurse has never been identified. She would have to have been a member of the 42nd Field Hospital, and all the nurses had been evacuated before the Germans got there. Monahan and Neidel-Greenlee, in their excellent book on army nurses in the ETO, "And If I Perish," make no mention of the story, although they go to great length describing the actions of the nurses during the Battle of the Bulge.
Also, there is no indication as to what became of the nurse. She was certainly not taken to a POW camp. Only two American female military personnel were imprisoned by the Germans in WWII. 2LT Reba Whittle was a flight nurse who was captured in September 1944 when her plane went off course and was shot down. She was held in a POW camp until February 1945 when the Red Cross arranged for her exchange. 2LT Gertrude Legendre was an OSS supervisor who was captured in October 1944 when her jeep took a wrong turn and went into the German lines. She endured intense interrogation but never revealed her true job, claiming to be a file clerk and translator. Legendre eventually escaped, made it to Switzerland, and finally returned to her unit in Paris in March, 1945. Without solid information as to what became of the nurse who so enchanted the German general, it is difficult to believe the story to be other than a legend.
